THROUGH THEIR EYES
Young Lieutenants WW1 Photo Album ..served with 1/8th battalion Essex Regiment and Royal Flying Corps ..Killed in action Flying sopwith camel in 1918.
Here I offer a cd containing high resolution scans ( 1200dpi ) produced from 3 original photo albums which belonged to Lieutenant William John Shorter .
Lt .Shorter served with the 1/8th Battn Essex Reg. Circa 1915 -1916 ...he then moved on to serve with the Royal Flying Corp . On the 24.03.1918 , aged only 20 he was killed in action while flying a Sopwith Camel over German lines ...only 2 days earlier he just managed to return another badly damaged plane to an airfield near Arras .
Images within the albums are mainly centred on his time with the Essex Regiment in England ..training photos ...Gas drill , trench digging etc .
However , there are 4 nice photos of a Short sea plane on the River Crouch ...2 photos of the same Be2e taken at Stow maries airfield ? and 3 photos of Fe2d ...so a total of 9 plane photos .
An interesting insight into this young mans wartime experiences .
